One Language, Two Disciplines
A Unified Approach to ESDM and Communication
This presentation introduces the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) for young children with autism, highlighting its foundation as a Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) that merges ABA principles with child development science. The training explores the core therapeutic framework, Joint Activity Routines (JARs), emphasizing shared engagement and integrated teaching across daily experiences.
A major focus is placed on the ESDM Fidelity System, detailing its 13 items across three domains—Readiness to Learn, Collaborative Learning, and Approach to Teaching—and the 5-point scoring scale used to ensure quality implementation. Specifically, the presentation dives deep into the two communication-focused fidelity items: Language Level (K) and Communicative Opportunities (J), providing concrete strategies for optimal implementation, such as the “one-up rule” and scaffolding frequent, diverse communication functions. The presentation also discusses collaboration models, emphasizing the organization's commitment to the Transdisciplinary, or Integrated Care, approach for cohesive treatment planning and better client outcomes.
A dedicated Question & Answer section between a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is featured, covering complex topics such as language functions, the one-up rule for Gestalt Language Processors, and adapting strategies for AAC users.
