Defensible Supervision: Elevating Coaching and Documentation Practices in Applied Behavior Analysis
BCBAs can earn 1 Supervision CEU
Mounting regulatory scrutiny, including increased payor audits and requirements, has increased pressure on the field and highlighted a critical gap: inconsistent and often low-quality clinical supervision. Many Board Certified Behavior Analysts lack adequate training and resources to provide high-quality supervision, which results in an ineffective use of their time during supervision and non-defensible clinical documentation. This presentation addresses these challenges by providing a potential framework to build a robust and defensible supervision practice. We will draw upon established resources described in the literature (Saunders, 2023) to introduce practical tools, including a dedicated coaching checklist and strategies to guide supervision sessions and support writing effective clinical narratives. The focus will be on establishing, measuring, and sustaining clear supervisory standards to support excellence in practice and documentation. Attendees will learn actionable strategies to transform their supervision from a payor expectation to a meaningful, effective coaching partnership that not only satisfies requirements but also ensures high-quality care, professional development for supervisees, and clear clinical narratives that capture it all.
